Transcribing Kindle Cloud Reader pages
BookHalo is a Chrome extension that transcribes Kindle Cloud Reader pages. It captures the pages you can view in the browser, transcribes them, and exports text plus a reference PDF.
full_text.txt, and a reference PDF.Before you start
- Desktop Chrome. BookHalo is a Chrome extension and runs on the computer in front of you.
- A book you can already open in Kindle Cloud Reader. BookHalo works from the page your browser is showing. It does not unlock anything you cannot already read, and sample editions are not supported.
- A supported Amazon reader domain —
read.amazon.com,read.amazon.co.uk,read.amazon.co.jp,read.amazon.de,read.amazon.fr,read.amazon.it,read.amazon.es,read.amazon.nl,read.amazon.ca,read.amazon.com.au,read.amazon.in,read.amazon.com.br,read.amazon.com.mxand their localised aliases. - A BookHalo account. You sign in with a one-time code sent to your email address. There is no password.
Follow the current capture workflow
The step-by-step manual shows the current controls and where to start. Use Test to check representative pages, then return to your intended starting position before Run.
Keep Kindle in front during capture. Once capture is complete and transcription is running, you can work in other tabs or apps while keeping the Kindle tab and Chrome open. The ZIP downloads after processing finishes, not immediately after capture.
What you get
A ZIP containing the transcribed text, a reference PDF of the captured pages, and the page images. It is saved to your device automatically when processing finishes — there is no button to press.
Finished books stay in Processing status for 7 days, so you can download the same file again, for example on the same computer after clearing your downloads folder. The file itself is on your device; the 7 days apply to re-downloading it from BookHalo.
Limits
- Test — 3 pages per book, 20 books a month. Free.
- Run — up to 1,000 pages per book, 10 books a month.
- Need more? Extra books can be bought from the popup.
If something goes wrong
Nothing happens, or it stops at 0 pages
BookHalo reads your current position from the reader footer. If the footer does not show a location, the extension cannot start. Click once on the page, turn a page with the arrow keys, and check that the position in the footer changes. If the arrow keys do not turn pages, BookHalo cannot either.
A dialog appears asking to go to the most recent page
Kindle shows this when your reading position differs between devices. It covers the page and interrupts the capture. Dismiss it before you start, and keep the book at the position you want to capture from.
The browser says it is out of storage
Transcription happens in your browser and needs room to work. Delete finished books you no longer need from Processing status, or free up space on the computer, then try again.
The transcription has mistakes
Pick the language of the book in Book language before you start — this is the single setting that changes accuracy the most. Ruby text, vertical writing, tables and very dense layouts are harder to read, and a decorative large capital at the start of a chapter is sometimes dropped. Run Test on the same book first: three pages are enough to see what you will get.
Billing
Payment is handled by Stripe. You can cancel at any time from Manage in the popup; access continues until the end of the period you have already paid for. Prices depend on the country of your payment method and are shown before you confirm.
What you can do with the output
- Search through a personal reading-note text file.
- Use the text with NotebookLM, ChatGPT, Claude, or another AI tool if its terms allow it.
- Keep the PDF for visual reference and spot checks.
- Review dense books without manually copying page by page.
What BookHalo is not
BookHalo is not a DRM removal tool and does not replace buying or accessing a book through Kindle. It works from the rendered browser reader and is intended for personal reading notes and study support.
