Pin the Extension

Open a Book on Kindle Cloud Reader

Go to read.amazon.com or your local Kindle Cloud Reader / Kindle for Web domain in your browser and open the book you want to use for personal reading notes. Use the browser version, not the Kindle app.

Sign Up / Log In with Email

Click the BookHalo icon to open the popup, enter your email address, and log in with the verification code.

Click Start to Begin

Press the button and BookHalo will automatically turn pages, capture screenshots, and run OCR. When finished, a ZIP file with OCR text and a reference PDF is downloaded automatically.

Download & Review the ZIP

Once processing is complete, the results are automatically downloaded as a ZIP file with AI-ready text.

Downloaded files:

  1. Find "Book Title.zip" in your browser's download bar or Downloads folder
  2. Right-click → "Extract All" to unzip (on Mac, double-click)

Inside the folder:

  • 📄 full_text.txt — OCR-created reading-note text
  • 📕 book.pdf — Reference PDF for processed pages

Use the text file with NotebookLM or ChatGPT for personal reading notes and study support.

Important Notes

  • Do not switch tabs or windows while processing. It may affect screenshot capture.
  • Kindle sample/preview books are not supported.
  • Desktop Google Chrome (or Chromium-based browser) is required.

Yes. BookHalo OCRs visible pages in Kindle Cloud Reader and creates reading-note text plus a reference PDF. Outputs are intended for personal reading notes and study support.
What types of books are supported?
Any book viewable on a supported Kindle Cloud Reader / Kindle for Web domain is supported. Both fixed-layout and reflowable formats work.
Which OCR languages does BookHalo support?
English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, and Italian OCR normally runs locally in Chrome, with server fallback if local OCR fails. Japanese uses BookHalo's optimized server OCR and supports vertical and horizontal text.
Does it work with vertical text (Japanese books)?
Yes. Both vertical and horizontal text layouts are supported. The text recognition engine is optimized for Japanese text and handles vertical writing accurately.
How are two-page spreads handled?
When the browser displays a two-page spread, BookHalo automatically splits it into left and right pages, maintaining correct page order.
What file formats are output?
Reading-note text files (.txt) and a reference PDF are bundled together in a ZIP file for download.
Can I use it for free?
Yes. The free tier allows up to 20 books per month with up to 3 pages each. The full plan is $12.99/month for up to 10 books with up to 1,000 pages each. You can subscribe from within the Chrome extension.
Does BookHalo work outside Japan or the US?
BookHalo supports Kindle Cloud Reader / Kindle for Web domains in multiple regions, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, India, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Brazil, and Mexico. Regional Kindle behavior can vary, so please try the free tier first and contact us if your Kindle for Web domain does not open correctly.
Does it work with non-Kindle ebook services?
Currently, BookHalo is designed exclusively for Kindle Cloud Reader. Other ebook services are not supported.
Can I use it on my phone?
BookHalo is a Chrome extension and requires desktop Google Chrome. It is not available on mobile browsers.
